Thanks to our intrepid Content Curator, Reilly Smith, LBRYs beta release was a disaster.

What I mean to say is that we unleashed a disaster.

Ok, actually, we released the indie feature film Its a Disaster, and the response was tremendous.

The film grossed 1,900 LBC in the first two weeks after its release. Thats about $1,200 as of this writing. A good number of our beta users watched the movie.

It’s a Disaster theatrical poster

A groundbreaking content distribution platform is useless without great content. Its a Disaster is among the best there is.

The film stars David Cross (Arrested Development, Mr. Show), Julia Stiles (The Bourne Ultimatum, Dexter), and was produced by some of Hollywoods brightest rising talent. The setting for this dark comedy is a regular Sunday brunch attended by four couples. The gathering is filled with the tension, and awkwardness audiences have grown to love in Cross performances. The strained brunch goes even further off the rails when a deadly chemical attack occurs in the nearby city, apparently dooming the attendees to an unpleasant death.

Its a Disaster is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. It won 3 film festival awards when it was released, including Best Feature at both the Edmonton International and the New Orleans Film Festivals. Jim Emerson reviewed it for RogerEbert.com, giving it a solid recommendation:

“The movies funniest touches are quiet flashes of character, expertly timed and nimbly played by a deft ensemble. Its a Disaster is consistently funny, but you wince more often than you laugh out loud. Its like a Christopher Guest improvisational farce with the volume turned down to 5.”

This is the first film for LBRY users from Oscilloscope Laboratories, one of the most respected indie film distribution companies in Hollywood. The oscilloscope was founded by the late Beastie Boy, Adam Yauch, aka MCA.

Oscilloscope showed its penchant for forward-thinking by becoming one of the featured content partners for our July 4 launch. Were excited about the possibility of adding additional O-scope films to LBRY down the road.

Reilly said he hoped exposing users to Oscilloscope Labs would “lead viewers down a rabbit hole of discoveries.” He said:

Its a Disaster is the quintessential indie comedy with something for everyone. We couldnt have been luckier this film is the perfect way to celebrate the launch of LBRY.”

If you are a LBRY beta user and havent watched Its a Disaster yet, check it out. We think youll enjoy the film. And the more people who watch and love Its a Disaster, the more great movies LBRY will get in the future.
